This book, the second in our series “Scenes of Japanese Culture,” introduces major trends in Japanese culture from the late eighth to the sixteenth century.
The Japanese Middle Ages were a period when Japanese identity was shaped in various fields including clothing, cuisine, and dwellings as well as armor and literature due to the birth of the aristocracy and samurai class, and the nation’s unique aesthetics were developed. Through text and illustrations, this book offers a glimpse at how the foundations of contemporary Japanese culture were formed.
