中国伝来の暦のしくみである「七十二候」は、日本の風土や気候に合わせて幾度も改訂され、今に伝えられる。本作ではそのうち各季節から合計16候の言葉を選んで、その言葉によって想起されるイラストと情景を表した文で紹介する。「日々の過ぎてゆく時間の流れの中で、ささやかでも大切と思える出来事が、七十二候の中に言葉として生きています。」（「あとがき」より）
巻末に七十二候の一覧を掲載。
After Japan adopted the traditional lunisolar calendar from China, it was revised numerous times to more closely match Japan’s natural features and climate, eventually reaching its current form. This book introduces a total of sixteen ko or “micro-seasons” selected from each of the four seasons through illustrations depicting the meanings behind their names and descriptions of scenes connected to them. “Despite the unceasing passage of time, day after day, small but precious events live on in the names of Japan’s micro-seasons.” (from “Afterword”)
A list of all seventy-two micro-seasons is included at the end of the book.
