1890年に来日し、日本人の妻・セツの助けを借りながら日本の伝説や奇談を収集し、『知られざる日本の面影』のような日本を紹介した著作を数多く残した小泉八雲（ラフカディオ・ハーン）。2025年9月からは八雲とセツをモデルとしたNHK連続テレビ小説『ばけばけ』が放送され、話題となった。
本作は、小泉八雲が収集したKwaidan（怪談）の中で最も有名な物語の一つである。芳一が体験した恐怖をぜひ、小泉八雲の書いたオリジナルの英語でも味わってみていただきたい。

KWAIDAN: Hoichi-the-Earless

Hoichi is a young blind man who is a skilled minstrel of the biwa (Japanese lute). One night, a samurai appears before him and guides him to a house where many nobles are assembled. Hoichi plays and recites the tragic history of the Heike clan for them as ordered. They command him to speak of this to no one and to perform for them the following night as well. What are the true identities of these samurai and nobles?

After moving to Japan in 1890, the writer Lafcadio Hearn (also known as Yakumo Koizumi) collected Japanese legends and ghost stories with the help of his Japanese wife Setsu and left behind numerous writings introducing Japan to the Western world, including Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan. The NHK television drama series The Ghost Writer’s Wife inspired by him and Setsu began airing in September 2025 and became a hit.

This work is one of the most famous tales from Hearn’s collection Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. The terror that Hoichi experienced is vividly conveyed in Hearn’s original English.
